Click HERE to sign up on Eventbrite!

This is the second event of the new Data Warehouse, Business Intelligence and Analytics meetup.

Talks:

1. Eduardo Arino de la Rubia: MySQL to Vertica with Tungsten Replicator

In this very (very) short talk, I will discuss how you can, for free, stream your MySQL data to a Vertica Community Edition cluster, and do near real-time analytics on up to 1TB of data.

Bio: I am a computer programmer and technologist with over 30 years experience, working in many different fields ranging from expert systems for compliance to manufacturing robotics. I am a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University and live with my wife, son, and 3 dogs in lovely Santa Monica.

2. Lior Abraham: Building Modern Analytics for Trillions of Data Points

Abstract: There are many systems designed to address large volumes of data, but analytics, or ad-hoc queries, are often left in the dust. Query times on the order of hours or days. Data consumers are required to write code or complex SQL to answer even the most basic questions. At Facebook we built real-time systems that reduced to complex queries answered by hundreds of servers across terabytes of data in seconds or less. This talk covers how we applied the same principles to data, with one use case in-mind: analytics. How do we achieve scale at trillions of rows, maintain interactive speeds, keep broad flexibility and expressibility, and above all, make data accessible. Further, if we can achieve this, what is the impact on data science and data consumers.

Bio: Mr. Lior Abraham is a Co-Founder of Interana, Inc. Mr. Abraham was instrumental in scaling Facebook’s infrastructure from a few million users to over a billion, as well as bringing its most technically challenging products to market. This included building many of the back-end systems that powered Facebook, like the News Feed, and the real time comment stream for the first Obama Inauguration. He also built Facebook’s most popular internal tools for data analysis. He previously worked for Veritas/Symantec. He received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from U.C. Berkeley.

DW/BI/Analytics Meetup Summary: Inaugural Event

The LA Data Warehouse, Business Analytics and Analytics meetup had a fantastic first event with a great audience (full house), an awesome host (thanks Edmunds: Punnoose for taking the lead and the Team onsite and helping) and a great mix of 3 talks overviewing the field.

Meetup: Stream processing with R in AWS

Update: Slides click here. Video recording here: This video is no longer available on YouTube (original link). Stream processing with R in AWS by Gergely Daróczi Abstract: R is rarely mentioned among the big data tools, although it’s fairly well scalable for most data science problems and ETL tasks. This talk presents an open-source R package to interact with Amazon Kinesis via the MultiLangDaemon bundled with the Amazon KCL to start multiple R sessions on a machine or cluster of nodes to process data from theoretically any number of Kinesis shards. Besides the technical background and a quick introduction on how Kinesis works, this talk will feature some stream processing use-cases at CARD.com, and will also provide an overview and hands-on demos on the related data infrastructure built on the top of Docker, Amazon ECS, ECR, KMS, Redshift and a bunch of third-party APIs.
