LA R Meetup - November 11: Highlights from the useR! 2014 conference - Part 2

At this meetup, five more LA R meetup members will present short talks of what they have learned at useR! 2014. This is the 2nd round of talks about useR! since we had twice as many volunteers to speak as we could accommodate in one meetup (indeed, useR! was that awesome). The first round of talks at our September meetup is summarized here (with slides).

Talks:

  1. Szilard Pafka, Epoch and DataScience.LA
Benchmarking dplyr and data.table (with biggish data) - this is my own work but inspired by useR!

  2. Ajay Gopal, CARD.com
enteRprise - perspectives from useR2014! on R in production

  3. Eric Kim, The Search Agency
How The Search Agency is using Shiny to build custom interactive reports to optimize SEM revenues for advertisers

  4. Daniel Gutierrez, insideBIGDATA
A personal “Best of” list for those useR! 2014 presentations I attended

5. Eduardo Ariño de la Rubia, Ingram Content Group
Packrat: Making your life more predictable with dependency management

Date: November 11, 2014 (Tuesday)

Timeline:

  • 6:00pm pizza arrives and networking
  • 7:00pm talks starts promptly

You must have a confirmed RSVP and please arrive by 6:55pm the latest. Please RSVP here on Eventbrite.

Venue: Amobee (formerly Adconion) in Santa Monica will kindly host this meetup and provide pizza and drinks. (A big Thank You to both Mikhail and Amobee!)

LA R Meetup Summary: Highlights from the useR! 2014 Conference

Last week the LA R meetup featured 5 speakers each highlighting a few things they had found interesting at the useR! 2014 conference (which I had the pleasure of helping to organize this year in Los Angeles). This meetup proved to be interesting even to those of us who attended the conference (which was about half of our audience), simply because there were so many cool things to hear and enough parallel sessions at the conference that no one could possibly capture all of the action.

dplyr - some more reflections

·4 mins
Yesterday, I published a post here on DataScience.LA with a simple/basic benchmark for dplyr. It was the main part of a short talk at our last Los Angeles R meetup. Below, I continue my thoughts with some reflections on dplyr’s API and philosophy, AKA the other part of my talk.
